Choosing a good golf club

Choosing a golf club is not as easy as looking at the price tag. I have to admit that the brand name clubs which usually cost more have a lot of technology in them and a lot of technology is used to produce them, and they usually look great, but that doesn’t mean they are the right choice for you.

The top golf irons now are the ones with a cavity back design, they have extra metal added to the back of the club head around the edge, and then more metal at the bottom on the back with a cavity between that weight and the club face. The extra weight around the edge helps to stiffen the head so it doesn’t twist on impact and increases the size of the sweetspot, while the weight near the bottom helps you get the ball up into the air. As pretty much all the standard irons are already a cavity back design then there are no massive differences between them.

With drivers it is a different matter. As they have a much bigger head then there is a lot more room for new technology to be fitted in and you can see all sorts of wild and wonderful stuff being crammed into them. The square driver caused quite a stir when it first came out, the idea behind it is that you give a lot of strength to the club face by having the extra support and weight in the far corners making the square shape, then the face does not twist on impact and the sweetspot is massive. There are also adjustable drivers which help you to tweak your shot by moving little weights along tracks or taking them out to swap around, and one with an adjustable head so you can change the angle at impact etc to suit your style of play.
